Cheaters

This week’s topic deals with cheaters on taxes. An article titled “Tax cheats: Single, young and male by Blake Ellis. The article can be found on CNNmoney.com. the article discusses the typical tax cheaters, which according to the article is young single males. It includes males under the age of 45 in the young category.
The article discusses the topic and gives quotes from creditable sources throughout the article. At the beginning of the article it gives some statistics about the cheaters in America. The article has ads on each side of it which deal with refinance rates, oil stock in the US, and mortgage rates. It discusses the things that the cheaters tried to deduct from their taxes. After this it gives more statistics about the cheaters, except this time it is on if they will steal from their children.

Single males under the age of 45 have been found to be the highest percentage of cheaters when it comes to paying taxes. Only 15% of Americans confessed to cheating on their taxes on a survey. 64% of that 15% were males and 35% of those were single and 55% were under the age of 45. Of these males their behavior of cheating on taxes was not the only bad conduct they have. 73% of them work under the table jobs and are most likely to keep the incorrect amount of change given to them by a cashier. Cheaters are most likely to steal money from a child, this includes taking money from a child’s piggy bank.

This article is important to me because I feel that no one should try to cheat the system. Cheating the system can affect everything in our government. By affecting the government affects all of our lives in the United States.  As a single male under 45 in this country I feel that the “cheaters” are giving males a bad name in the United States. Taxes should not be cheated on because that puts more taxes on the honest people who do their taxes correctly.

Print analysis

The classroom’s assigned chapter discusses newspapers. Newspapers were the first mass medium to deliver news. America’s first newspaper was published in 1690. The title of the first newspaper is Publick Occurrences. Newspapers were the only mass medium available until 1920 when the radio was introduced to America. There was no competition for newspapers until early 20th century. The introduction of broadcasting made it easier and quicker for people to retrieve information.
The newspaper was first used as the voice of the British government. Everything in that was to appear in newspapers was to be approved by the British government. Newspapers printed “Published by Authority” to let the readers know that the newspaper was approved by the government. The newspaper Publick Occurrences was published in Boston, Massachusetts it was the only issue printed. The newspaper upset local authorities and was not printed anymore. The nation’s first consecutively published newspaper was The Boston News-Letter. It was published in 1704.
In the 19th century technology advanced and the print industry capitalized on it. Things such as cheaper newspaper, mechanized printing, and telegraphing helped newspapers reach audiences faster. New developments came about because of these new advances. These developments include frontier journalism, ethnic and cultural newspapers, and the alternative press.
Newspapers were looking for bigger audiences and more profit, so they developed the penny press. The penny press was newspapers sold every day for a penny. Before this newspapers were sold in a yearly advance for $6 to $10. The first penny paper was four pages long and included local gossip and police news. A group known as the newsboys would buy one hundred papers for 67 cents and try to sale them all for a penny a piece to make a profit.
Future financial success of newspapers depends on their ability to appeal to a shifting audience and meet growing competition. Young readers and women have declined in the newspaper industry. Newspapers are using new features and special sections used for teenagers and women to help stop the slide in readership. To survive newspapers must keep the public informed and stay profitable.

PR response

In JMC 201 there was a presentation given about the Public Relations industry. The presentation was given by a group of students in the class. The students’ names are Bo Morris, Augusta Clark, and Megan Thompson. They put together a excellent presentation that lasted about an hour and a half. The presentation covered most aspects of the Public Relations’ industry. They also covered some jobs in the industry as well.
The presentation started off great and caught my attention from the start. The presentation felt as if everyone had worked together to create it. The group did an outstanding job on providing ample information on the public relation industry. Each member appeared to have contributed an equal portion of the information provided to the class. They were all well dressed, and spoke loud and clearly throughout the presentation and discussions.
The group used a power point as the visual aid. The power point was put together excellent. It was filled with information to keep the class informed about the topic of discussion.  There were a couple pictures also used to help the class understand the discussion topics. Unlike most groups that presented they did not use multiple videos in the power point. The power point consisted of just one video towards the end of the presentation. This provided great examples to the audience of how the public relations’ industry has changed since the industry began. The group had a great class activity, which got the whole class involved in the presentation.
There were some weak spots in the presentation. There were some holes in the presentation. Some of these holes were located in the section of the presentation that discussed the careers in the industry. If there was just a little more information provided on the careers the presentation would have been perfect.
Overall the presentation was good. The group did a great job putting the presentation together. A couple of simple things could have been changed to make the presentation great. The group came in confident about the knowledge that they had on the topic.

Periodical part 2

The journal New Media & Society has been viewed along with the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media. These journals both discuss issues and development in the mass medium world. Although they discuss some of the same issues, they are very different from each other. New Media & Society is a younger journal than Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media.
A major difference in the two journals is the frequency of the production of the journals. New Media & Society is produced twice as much as the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media. New Media & Society is published eight months out the year. The Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media is published quarterly in the months of March, June, September, and December. New Media & Society is published during these months also creating competition. A downfall to only publishing the journal quarterly is that new developments may occur during the months that the journal is not being published. This may turn consumers away because they will become less informed on new technology.
The journals have completely different outlooks on their journals. The Broadcasting & Electronic Media journal publishes the journal’s cover in color. While the New Media & Society’s cover is in black and white. This coloring feature may attract consumers because the journal will stand out to them. The black and white theme may come off to consumers as boring, dull, or not interesting. This can cause a decrease in subscribers.
Although the journals have different outlooks they cover some of the same topics in their journals. Some of the topics that are covered in both are new developments in the media, new trends, and new technology in the mass medium world.  They also target the same consumers in the mass medium world. The fact that one is produced more than the other hurts the other one also and the information provide may be more current and useful.
The last argument being made is about the journals age and how long they have been around. New Media & Society has been published since April of 1999, and is still being published today. The latest journal produced was in February 2011. The Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media was first published in September of 1997, which makes it about two years older than New Media & Society. Unfortunately there are no records of it being published since September 2009. This information would recommend that the journal has stopped producing issues.

Periodical Part 1

Mass media is changing everyday now as technology changes. To help people keep up with the latest changes the New Media & Society journal produces a new journal eight months out the year. The journal brings discusses new media developments and also other things happening in the world in general. This journal is ranked 10 out of 54 top communications journals.
New Media & Society is an international journal published by SAGE publications. SAGE is a international publishing company. New Media & Society was created to explore the social dynamics of media and information change. The journal engages in discussions of some key issues in the upcoming media development. This journal was developed in 1999. The first issue was published and distributed in April of 1999. If looking for this journal it can be found in the communications, technology, culture and media, or sociology sections. The journal is published during the months of February, March, May, June, August, September, November, and December.
It has several different types of subscriptions that are available. The first is the institutional subscription combined. This includes access to print and E-access. The cost of this subscription is $1,655 dollars. The institutional subscription with just E-access cost $1,490 dollars. The institutional subscription with just print access cost $1,622 dollars. An individual subscription with just print access cost $91 dollars. If looking to purchase just one individual copy of the journal, the institutional single print issue cost $223 dollars. The individual single print issue cost $15 dollars.
The journal has a website that allows for you to view the journal on. The site’s url is http://nms.sagepub.com/. Through the site you may view articles or post articles. The site is a basic site; it has a plain white back ground. The home page gives some information on the journal and a few interesting statics about it, such as it being ranked 10 out of 54 in communications. It consists of links from all issues of the journal and links to the articles that are posted on the website and not in the journal itself. You may comment on the articles in the journal on the website.
Advertising rates for the journal varied depending on size. The company put the size of advertisements into categories. There are three categories Rate code A, Rate code B, and Rate code C. Rate code A cost £600, which is the equivalent of $975.72 U.S. dollars. Rate code B cost £650, which is equal to $1,057.03 in U.S. dollars. Rate code C cost £1050, which is equal to $1,707.51 in U.S. dollars.

Gas to go up or down

A hot topic in the United States is gas prices and how much will they increase over the next couple of weeks. An article from CNNmoney.com titled “Gas prices are going lower. Really” by Steve Hargreaves explains what is predicted to happen to gas prices. This article was chosen because this issue is one of the main focuses in the United States. Gas shot up by 17 cents last week and was at $3.29. This week gas prices are around $3.43.

The article is started off by discussing if the war in violence in the Middle East were to increase how quick gas prices would pass $4 a gallon. The author points out a bunch of what “ifs” in the article. It takes a look at the issue from two points of view. The first view shows that prices will fall. The second view is showing gas prices increasing. The author bases his article on the interview of Addison Armstrong.

The Middle East is at war with itself and experts are worried that it will spread into Saudi Arabia or another big oil supplier. If this happens it will drive gas prices past $4 dollars per gallon and may even reach $5 dollars per gallon. Most analysts think that if the oil supplying countries remain undisrupted that gas prices will fall 25 to 75 cents a gallon. The average for 2011 gas prices was predicted to be $3 a gallon. To reach this average gas will have to sell for around $2 a gallon to make up for the weeks above $3 a gallon.

Gas has been a big problem in America for a few years now. It has never been this big of a problem in the history of the United States. This is a big issue in the college world also. Because it is around spring break time and students will be traveling home and to the beaches throughout the month. I believe that this is a great article to read to help inform you about how gas prices will change in the near feature. I agree with the statements made about the prices in the article. The prices could possibly drop down to around $2 per gallon over the next couple of years.
